Seminar: Akkadian Language
The module is dedicated to more difficult Akkadian texts from various periods and regions of the ancient Near East. It conveys a representative overview of the development of Akkadian based on selected reading examples (especially Assyrian and Babylonian, but also different forms of so-called 'Peripheral Akkadian'), of the position of Akkadian among the Semitics languages and of the language contacts between Akkadian and other languages of the ancient Near East. The reading of texts is central to the module; specific topics will be covered by individual student presentations.
The student will acquire a comprehensive overview of the development of Akkadian from the 3rd and into the 1st millennium BC as well as basic knowledge of the linguistic position of Akkadian. He/she will possess a deepened understanding of selected text groups from the history of the Akkadian language, especially with regard to their language form. The student will be capable of transliterating, translating and commenting upon the texts assigned or read in class. He/she will possess the ability to transliterate, translate and classify (with regard to content) more difficult Akkadian texts beyond the curriculum of the class with the help of dictionaries and sign lists.
